Modernisation in our grinding section

28.07.2020

Efficient, state-of-the-art production lays the foundation in industry for companies competing on the global market. The purchase of three new Kopp SN 208 high-performance grinding machines from EMAG, the prestigious machine tool manufacturer, represents a further significant foundation stone for Schleicher Fahrzeugteile. The overall costs for this project run to approximately € 4 m and this investment has modernised the grinding section at our Munich plant: the last grinder was delivered and commissioned in June 2020.

All three machines serve to combine the cylindrical and cam grinding of workpieces and extend our entire range of production to a length of 1500 mm. Each offers comprehensive features and functions, e.g. B axis with two grinding units, up to five Arobotec bezels and Siemens 840D controls with programming and computation software. The universal application spectrum is supported by three different integrated measuring systems which allow pre-process, in-process and post-process measurement. This ensures premium quality assurance and process reliability.

The machines comprise only standard components and this configuration can be universally implemented. Enabling the manufacture of cam shafts for small motors through to ship engines in one machine and chucking was also unchartered territory for EMAG. The wealth of features offered by three machines and easy retooling ensure the greatest possible flexibility in machining for Schleicher Fahrzeugteile.

Our Head of Construction, Hartmut Wahr (on right of photo), has described this new generation of machines as a "quantum leap" for the grinding section at our Munich plant. Results to date have been excellent and the fusion of several grinding processes has led to considerable time savings in setup and measurement. There are clear indications already that our project targets will be substantially exceeded.

These successes are owed to the highly motivated and dedicated cooperation between all participants – on the EMAG side as well as at Schleicher Fahrzeugteile. Many thanks to all those involved in this mammoth project for their excellent work.
